N. A. Foy: Tell us a little about Synkvervet. What have you released so far?  What are you currently working on?

Synkvervet: Synkvervet started out as a one-man studio project by Ingemar in the fall of 2011. Originally Synkvervet was supposed to be a pure instrumental project, but it didn’t take long before he realized that the project needed vocals, and Truls was asked to join. They released “Vår Avmakt” in 2013. A few months later Truls and Ingemar started working on a new album. They decided to bring in Rino on drums and Espen on guitar. Christina and Niclas joined as guest vocalists on a few tracks on “Trollspeil” which was released in 2014. Later they became permanent members of Synkvervet, and Niclas also ended up playing bass. The Ep “Forgotten Memories” was released in 2015. The last couple of months we have been working on a music video and our new album.

N. A. Foy: Tell us about your new album?  Is there a release date?  How is it different from your last album?

Synkvervet: Our new album is due to be released at the end of May. It’s a little bit more melodic than what we have released before. We wanted to focus on combining the brutality of the double bass drums, hard riffing guitars and grim vocals, with very fragile melodic sections, accompanied by Christina and Niclas. We feel that we somehow managed to make it all merge together and  produce something exiting, dark, and beautiful.  Christina will also be singing on all of the songs.

N. A. Foy: Do you have a release date for your new video? Can you tell us what the name of the video will be?

Synkvervet: We will release the music video to “Aurora” in a couple of weeks from now. So. follow our Facebook and Youtube channel for updates.

N. A. Foy: If you had a short time to describe Synkvervet in an elevator, what would you say?

Synkvervet: Melodic, aggressive and Norwegian. Nothing like the shit pan flute tunes they play in this elevator.

N. A. Foy: How old were you when you decided to pursue a career in music and were there any particular musicians or singers that inspired you?

Truls: I decided when I was 16. A friend of mine at school showed me the “Roots” album of Sepultura. I had never heard anything like it before. The aggressiveness, the noise, and the power of Max Cavalerras’ vocals blew me away. My first thought was, I’m going to do that. I went home that same day and got rid of most of my cd`s and started buying new ones, metal ones. I listened to the vocals and practiced and practiced until I thought I was close, then moved on to the next band, always more aggressive and always more extreme. When I was 19 ,I got into my first band. The rest is history.

Christina: I decided to join Synkveret when I was with Truls and Ingemar doing some recording for Trollspeil. And I could hear that there were places in the songs which would benefit from female vocals. I presented my idea and both Truls and Ingemar said: “yeah, it would be awesome, but who in hell Is going to do it?” I volunteered, and here I am.

Ingemar: To me, making music has always been a hobby since I started playing guitar. I actually never had a goal to make a living out of creating music. Kurt Cobain is one of many that inspired me to start playing the guitar.

Rino: I guess I was around 15/16 years old and had done my first gigs and started getting the taste for it. Although I never been able to live of it, it’s always been a dream and a goal for me. My biggest inspiration is Nicko Mcbrain of Iron Maiden. I Just love his playing, his attitude, and his Joy of playing live. He has always been my key to what I wanna do on stage.

Niclas: I've never really pursued a full time career in music… always the realist. I knew that the chances of really makin' it big were slim to none in the metal genre. But, of course, there have been dreams; I would say it started with listening to Elvis as a young boy. I once got an offer to join the Norwegian Opera as a kid, but having just discovered Kiss that was a major No (kinda regret that today though).
My biggest influences are Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury (Queen), and Rob Halford (Judas Priest), all amazing singers with great range.

Espen: What Niclas said… There's always been Dreams! But the older you get, the less realistic It seems. Especially knowing about other very talented musicians getting close to making it, but in the end no cigar.  Growing up, being a huge Metallica fan, made me want to start playing guitar. So, they have always been a big inspiration along with Pantera, Slayer, Sepultura, and Devin Townsend to mention some. Later on, I got more and more taste for death, black, and doom metal, and the list of bands is long. Like Satyricon, Windir, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Children of Bodom, At the gates, Carcass, Behemoth, Death, Swallow the sun… the list goes on…

N. A. Foy: Is there a story behind the band name Synkvervet?

Synkvervet: Ingemar stumbled across it when reading about “Huldra” (a paranormal forest creature which appears in Scandinavian folklore). Synkvervet means that you have distorted sight and mind, and that you no longer can tell the difference between right or wrong.

N. A. Foy: What are some things you like to do for enjoyment when you are not doing music?

Truls: Reading books and historical magazines.

Christina:  I like to read; I like history books and magazines, and I love computer games.

Ingemar: Geocaching and spending time with my family.

Rino: When not playing music, I enjoy riding my Harley and I love cooking.

Niclas:  Walks in the woods with my dog, binge-watching Sci-Fi shows, and playing World of Warcraft.

Espen: When not playing music, i enjoy doing sports, being outside in nature, boating or just stay home and do nothing.

N. A. Foy: If you were stuck on an island and somehow were able to listen to music, what 3 CDs would you want with you?

Truls: Pest(swe) - “Desecration,” Tom Waits – “Swordfish Trombone,” Dissection – “Storm of the light's bane.”

Christina: Lord Belial — “Enter the Moonlight Gate,” Cradle of Filth — “Vempire,” Falconer — “Falconer.”

Ingemar: Burzum – “Filosofem,” Seigmen – “Radiowaves,” and NOFX – “Punk in Drublic.”

Rino:  Not and easy pick but i guess by todays mood it would be: Thåstrøm – “Kjærlek er for dom,” Windir – “Likferd,” and Chris Stappleton  - “Traveller.” That’s a nice little mix of genres.

Niclas: Judas Priest – “Nostradamus,” Arch Nemesis – “Of mind and shadows” (to remember good times), and Queen – “Innuendo”

Espen: Strapping Young Lad – “Alien,” Swallow the Sun – “Hope,” If I was to turn mentally insane on the Island I think Primus – “Sailing the Seas of Cheese” would be nice tunes to that.

N. A. Foy: Out of the lyrics you perform so far, is there a particular one that you like best? Is there a story behind it?

Truls: “Breathtaking” from “Trollspeil.” It’s about how you as a human can find your inner strength through the forces of nature, and how you never should bow your head to anything but yourself.

Christina: I think maybe “Hulderlokk.” I like that the lyrics touch on Norwegian folklore, and the way the lyrics tell the story about Huldra, and how she lures people into the mountains.

Niclas: So far, my favorite is “Vandrer Heden” from “Trollspeil.” I love the intensity; the desperation in both vocals and in the lyrics.

N. A. Foy: Us fans always like to know things about the band members. How about some favorites. What is your favorite color? Number? Foods? Movie(s)? Book(s)? Or any other favorites you want to mention?

Truls: Black and dark forest green, 13, beef (rare), “Pans Labyrinth,” “Fra Christiania Bohemen” - Hans Jæger.

Christina: Black, red, and purple;  I dont have a favorite number, but let’s say 7; pasta carbonara is good, but so is a lot of other things. I like all kind of movies, but “It” has a special place in my heart. I love to read, so I have lots of favorite books, but my favorite author is Ken Follett.  Other than that, I really like dragons ;)

Ingemar: -Black and white (if we can label them as colors). Favorite number is 7. Favorite dish is “Flesk & Duppe.” Favorite film is “Schindlers List.” Favorite book is “Rinnan-jævel.”

Rino:  My favorite color is black, my Lucky number has always been 21, as for food i would go for Norwegian pinnekjøtt.

Niclas: Green (since black is not a color); 42 (the meaning of life), my (soon to be) wife's homemade burger with sweet potato fries, “Forest Gump,” “The wheel of time” series +++.

Espen:  I don’t really have a favorite color, but blood red is a good one. No favorite number either to be honest.. but 18 feels okay!  Food, It’s hard to choose just one, but my wife's homemade pizza is high on the list!

N. A. Foy: What is the main message you want to give to your fans through your music and example as a band? Is there anything else you would like to tell everyone before we finish?

Synkvervet: Through our music, we wish to bring you into the dark and mysterious world that is Synkvervet, and to show you that even in the darkest places you can find a touch of beauty.  Learn to do things yourself, make contacts, have fun, and don’t give up, you never know when your ship comes in.
