N. A. Foy: How old were you when you decided to pursue a career in music and were there any particular musicians or singers that  inspired you?

AZ : "I was 14 when I started playing guitar and 16 when I joined my first band. My influence at the time was John Petrucci."

EM: "I was 29 years old when I decided to make music a central part of my life, and this is the time I started writing and recording music. I was inspired by many musicians who influenced my musical style, which is a combination of metal and orchestra, and have always gravitated toward singers who live between those worlds. Tarja Turunen and Sharon del Adel were among the earliest singers who sparked my interest in this genre because they showed me that a classical singing style can be very relevant in current music. Outside of the genre, I have developed my strong lower range through listening to R&B and rock singers such T-Boz, Left Eye, and Chili from TLC, Gwen Stefani from No Doubt, and Alanis Morissette".

SN : "I was 18 years old when I started to learn to play bass guitar by myself. I had a video bass method of Stuart Hamm and tried to learn to play one song, but...that's hard! I like a lot the band Death and Steve Di Giorgio's bass playing style. I was 20 when I played in my first band which was a metal-hardcore band. 23 years ago, there were not a lot of women playing this kind of music... Concerning the vocals, I started to shout 7 years ago to replace a male singer during one of Unsafe’s (my other band) studio recording. I saw that Angela Gossow could do it then I learned quickly to growl by myself and had to sing the vocals line previously made for a man. I like the vocal style of Phil Anselmo (Pantera), Peter Dolving (The Haunted), Björn « Speed » Strid (Soilwork), Angela Gossow (Archenemy)..."

N. A. Foy: What are you currently working on?

AZ : "I am currently working on a solo for one of our songs."

EM: "Ashes Arise is currently working on completing our first album Resurgence from Oblivion. You can listen to a preview on SoundCloud!"

SN : "We're working on new songs arrangements."

N. A. Foy: If you had only a few minutes in an elevator to describe your band, what would you say?

AZ : "Melodic death metal with symphonic elements and female vocals."

EM: "We are a melodic metal band composed entirely of women who write, record, mix, and master our own music. We are an international group and work from three different locations — so we collaborate online! We mix cleans and screams to portray the different facets of our lives, and our lyrics are about navigating our struggles and finding our strengths."

SN : "Girl POWEEEERRR ! I was in a very fast elevator..."

N. A. Foy: What are some things you like to do for enjoyment when you are not doing music?

AZ : "I enjoy spending time with friends and loved ones.  Also love playing video games."

EM: "I stay busy with kickboxing, arts and crafts, and online video games. I always have ongoing projects and am constantly looking for new crafts to learn, for example I took a pattern drafting class a few years ago and have been making fancy dresses and skirts. I also love to hang out with my cat, who likes to act like a studio manager when I record."

SN : "I like to travel, visit new countries, meet new people, to Learn about civilizations, see incredible landscapes and buildings, go to see bands playing and taste new beers! And I also like to walk in the woods with my cat... But I spend most of my spare time doing music for enjoyment".

N. A. Foy: If you were stuck on an island and somehow were able to listen to music, what 3 CDs would you want with you?

AZ : Dream Theater "Images and words", Opeth "Blackwater park", Nightwish "Once."

EM : If I had to grab three albums right now, I would pick two old favorites – Nightwish “Oceanborn” and “Wishmaster” and a new favorite – Epica “Holographic Principle.” The music in all of these albums carry me through such rich stories and inspire so much creativity inside me. I would turn “Walking in the Air” on repeat to sleep.

SN : I would bring with me : Death "Individual Thought Patterns", Carcass "Heartwork", and The Haunted "Unseen".

N. A. Foy: Out of the lyrics you perform so far, is there a particular one that you like best? Is there a story behind it?

AZ : "Favorite lyrics are - Rising to the night, I’m waking to the sight of power!"

EM: "Every song has a story. Each is about an internal battle of some sort – between strength and weakness, the past and the present, fear and surrender. The hardest song for me to write, and the one that resonates with me so strongly is “Sleepwalker” because it’s about an experience I’ve struggled with for many years. It’s about living in a dream-like state and trying to find a way to be more present in the world. I like how the character finds a way out by breaking through the barriers between herself and the world around her. Many of the songs are about finding your inner strength."

SN : "Emily writes all the lyrics and all of them are good ones !"

N. A. Foy: Us fans always like to know things about the band members. How about some favorites. What is your favorite color? Number? Foods? Movie(s)? Book(s)? Or any other favorites you want to mention?

AZ : "My favorite color is purple, favorite number is 11, favorite food is sushi, favorite movie is "Girl Interrupted."

EM: "My favorite color is green, favorite number is 13 (unlucky !), favorite food is cake, favorite movies would be a really long list, and favorite books would be another really long list. I studied both English and Biology in University so I have done a lot of reading, and am always learning new things about the world. I’m like one of the Lost Boys from Peter Pan, someone who has a childlike curiosity and never grows up so I keep re-reading beloved books (His Dark Materials – Pullman, The Thief of Always – Barker, Harry Potter - Rowling, Beekeeper’s Apprentice - King), and keep re-watching my favorite movies (Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Legend, Pan’s Labyrinth, Lord of the Rings)."

SN : "Favorite color: black. Favorite number: 667 (the neighbour of the Beast !). Favorite foods: all French cooking and Asian cooking, with a good red wine, an amber beer and Kraken rum. My favorite movie is a series : "Twin Peaks" (I wait for a new season since 25 years!! My wish will soon come true !!!) My favorite books: "Game of Thrones" (George R. R. Martin) but I haven't finished all the books yet... my favorite South Park character is Towelie, my favorite sock pair (if someone is interested by that) is an all black one, the best invention for me is the Transporter: Star Trek teleportation machine, but it's too bad that it's not working yet, it would help me a lot in my travels..."

N. A. Foy: What is the message that you want to give your fans as an example as a band? Is there anything else you’d like to add before we finish ?

AZ : "Don't ever be afraid to be true to yourself and what you have to offer the world.  Each one of us is unique.  We all have gifts to share."

EM: "My advice to aspiring musicians is to take a look around you – are people supporting you or holding you back? If people are telling you to stop playing or singing or writing, keep looking until you find your people. They’re out there – you just have to find them!"

SN : "I just think that to make music, to play in bands, it's a lot of work and practice but it's also a lot of joy and sharing. When you like and want to play music, you have to do your best. My life would be so boring without music! I can also say that I'm very proud and happy to play in an all female metal band, it's a real pleasure for me as I spent a bit more than 20 years playing only with men... And my last words will be : "Merci pour votre soutien et merci pour cette interview!"

AZ and EM : "Thanks for the interview !"
